PROS AND CONS OF THE TURKISH PASSPORT (2025)
Why choose the Turkish passport as part of your Plan B portfolio?
TURKISH PASSPORT PROS
- Visa-Free Travel: Turkish passport holders have visa-free or visa-on-arrival access to over 110 countries, including Japan, South Korea, Singapore, and some South American, African, and Asian countries.
- Citizenship by Investment: Turkey offers a relatively affordable Citizenship by Investment (CBI) program, with a minimum real estate investment of $400,000. The application process can be completed in as little as 6-8 months.
- Dual Citizenship Allowed: Turkey permits dual citizenship, allowing new citizens to retain their original citizenship while enjoying the benefits of a Turkish passport.
- Geopolitical Position and Lifestyle: Turkey is strategically located between Europe and Asia, providing access to both regions. It offers a high quality of life, rich cultural heritage, and access to modern amenities and services.
- Access to the Turkish Market: Citizenship grants rights to live and work in Turkey, one of the fastest-growing economies in the region with a diverse and dynamic market.
- Foreign Residency Options For Turkish citizens: Turkish passport holders are also eligible for residency options in the UK and USA: UK: Ankara Agreement: Provides a route for Turkish citizens to establish businesses and reside in the UK; USA: E-2 Investor Visa: Turkey is a treaty country with the USA, allowing its citizens to apply for the E-2 Investor Visa, enabling residency for business purposes.
TURKISH PASSPORT CONS
- Limited Access to Schengen Zone: Turkish citizens require a visa to enter the Schengen Area countries (most of Europe), limiting ease of travel compared to passports from countries with visa-free Schengen access. A rare exception is Greece, which offers Turkish nationals a 7-day express entry visa. (This visa is not good for onward travel to other Schengen countries, though.)
- Political and Economic Instability: Turkey has experienced periods of political instability, economic volatility, high inflation rates, and currency devaluation, which could affect the overall attractiveness of its passport.
- Potential Security Concerns: The country is in proximity to conflict zones, such as Syria, and has faced domestic security challenges in the past, including terrorism threats and political unrest.
- Travel Restrictions to Certain Countries: Turkish passport holders may face restrictions or lengthy visa processes when traveling to certain countries, especially in the Middle East, or to countries that have complex political relationships with Turkey.
- Mandatory Military Service: Male Turkish citizens are subject to mandatory military service, which could be a consideration for those acquiring Turkish citizenship if they are under 22 years of age.
